Frequently Asked Questions
Caring for my super shrimps
How does the zero-maintenance, self-sustaining, Super Shrimp Oasis eco-system work?
Super shrimps and the moss ball (algae) share a unique symbiotic relationship. The algae produces oxygen for the shrimps. The super shrimps eat algae and biofilm that forms within the aquarium and the super shrimps give out carbon dioxide which the algae needs for photosynthesis and waste materials which serve as fertilizers for the algae.
Where should I place my Super Shrimp Oasis?
Please place your Super Shrimp Oasis indoors at room temperature (20-27 degrees Celsius) and in indirect sunlight. The Super Shrimp Oasis needs some light to help the algae grow, however, do not place your super shrimp oasis by the window because it can be cold (especially in winter time) and could be exposed to too much sunlight which could lead to too much algae.
Do I need to feed the super shrimps?
In a properly matured Super Shrimp Oasis there is no need to feed the super shrimps. The most common issue with the super shrimp oasis is not underfeeding but overfeeding. With that being said, we all love to give our pets a little treat every now and then. If you would like to give your super shrimps a little treat, you can give them maximum of 1/4 or 1/3 of the shrimp pellets every 2 weeks! Any uneaten food in the oasis could cause water pollution.
How long can the super shrimps live for? Will they grow bigger?
With proper care, super shrimps can live up to 20 years! They have a very slow metabolism and do not eat much. Opae ula in Hawaiian translates to “red shrimp” and they are called super shrimps because of their hardiness living in volcanic rock pools which can have fluctuations in salinity and temperature.
What to do if the water level is low?
Super shrimps live in brackish water which is a specific mixture of fresh and salt water. If the water level dips below *** from the original level, you can add distilled water back to the original level. Ensure the Super Shrimp Oasis aquarium is at room temperature and not in direct sunlight to minimize evaporation. The salinity of the aquarium……
What is happening when the super shrimps shed their exoskeleton (molt)?
If you notice transparent exoskeletons it means your shrimps have molted and have grown bigger. It is completely normal for the super shrimps to molt several times during their lifetime. The exoskeletons will gradually dissolve
